My Role
As a user experience designer on this project, my role was to perform UX research, design wireframes and visuals, build a design system, perform UI governance as well as document the entire project.
OVERVIEW
The Developer tool
We designed a developer tool that lets engineers test roaming networks from anywhere. The portal connects to Mobileum's patented lab device, which simulates real roaming conditions. This eliminated the need for engineers to travel internationally for testing.
PROBLEM
Engineers couldn't test roaming networks remotely
Network engineers test how mobile networks perform when customers roam internationally. These tests validate both coverage quality and partner billing accuracy against contractual agreements. But these tests require physical lab access and specialized equipment. This creates delays, blocks distributed teams from monitoring partner networks, and forces expensive international travel for testing.

NETWORK ENGINEER TRAVEL TO PERFORM TEST
Challenge : Enable scalable roaming network testing without on-site presence, reducing time and cost without compromising reliability.
THE ASK
Design an tool which can control a roaming network simulator

OPPORTUNITY
Remote roaming testing could dramatically cut the time, cost, and effort needed to validate network performance.
Cut testing cycles by 50–70% by eliminating travel
Reduce costs by 40–60% on logistics, equipment etc.
Increase testing frequency by 2–3×
Enable parallel testing across multiple locations
SOLUTION
A role-based remote network testing platform that eliminates the need for physical labs maintaining accuracy
Remote Radio Testing was one of the first products built on this technology to support fully remote network testing. The platform was designed around clear user roles. Admins could onboard users and manage permissions, operators set up network partners and test configurations, and test engineers ran tests and analyzed results remotely. This role-based setup streamlined collaboration and reduced dependency on physical labs.
SCHEDULE TEST
Select resources
Users select a network based on the lab where simulators are placed. Each simulator supports specific networks. Wireframe testing showed engineers prefer comparing lab and cell side by side, favoring a horizontal layout.
During research, we discovered this web portal will have a custom calendar shared company-wide and with Mobileum clients for testing. Grey slots indicate unavailable times that users cannot book or view due to compliance requirements.

SCHEDULE TEST
Add members and Summary
Testing and research showed users can invite team members based on operator-scheduled availability. A final review step before submission helps reduce human errors.

PERFORM TEST
Active testing session inside a lab
Engineers use lab cell (patented device) to simulate foreign networks with connected devices with international network SIM. This screen lets them analyze logs, extend sessions if available, check devices, and share logs with operators.
PROJECT IMPACT
The product simplified roaming network testing, saving time and costs while improving efficiency and accuracy for engineers.
TESTIMONIAL
“Our team was blown away looking at the designs shared by Priya, we never expected such an extensive product can be simplified in such a way and yet covers all the functionality. The designs have been delivered on time and we are glad to release it on time as well”

What’s next?
Moving forward, the vision is to evolve this into a complete end-to-end developer tool that reduces friction across setup and analysis. By auto-suggesting and validating test parameters based on past patterns and transforming dense signaling logs into clear root-cause insights, engineers can work faster with fewer errors and greater confidence.
Engineers often struggle to select the right parameters during test setup. AI can recommend validated parameters from past successful tests, reducing errors and accelerating configuration.

RESEARCH
My approach was to go deep into the domain’s complexity to uncover patterns and design with clarity.
Challenge
Unclear user flows
Since this technology was new to them, they were not clear about the user flow or the stakeholders involved in each functionality.
Not sure about user permissions
While they were still exploring the concept of user profiles, it was up to us to determine which users would have access to specific functionalities.
To address this, I conducted 40+ interviews and ran two co-creation workshops with engineers, stakeholders, and the product team.
We defined product ecosystem during co creation workshops
Co-creation workshops helped us map key attributes and shared roles across user groups for each screen, then we validated the structure along with functionality and actions with key stakeholders.

40+ interviews helped us understand role-based user flows and shared responsibilities.
We reviewed existing testing protocols and goals, then defined role-specific questions for user interview to map responsibilities and understand what each user role needed from the portal.

I started by understanding the request, the project scope, and the new testing ecosystem, as well as how their current system operates and the potential of the this patented device, which could simulates the roaming network at home country
Major takeaways
RRT (Remote Radio Testing) will have 3 main users : Testing engineer, Operator and Admin
This product will allow users to perform actions based on their roles during the testing operations.
DEFINE
While the end product had 30+ user flows, I will focus on the Test Engineer flow, as it is the core experience.

User flow for test engineer
I mapped the test engineer’s journey from scheduling a test to performing it in a lab that simulates real network conditions, focusing on clear setup, dependencies, and smooth execution.

REFLECTION
Learning to work through ambiguity
Designing a first-of-its-kind remote radio testing product meant working without benchmarks or established patterns. Ambiguity wasn't occasional—it was constant. I learned to make progress without perfect information.
I broke complex problems into manageable parts, validated assumptions early with network engineers and stakeholders, and iterated quickly to understand what worked. Each cycle brought more clarity.
This experience strengthened my ability to work in uncertain, fast-moving environments and turn ambiguity into clear, actionable design decisions.
