Accessibility is not about checklist

It’s about People

Industry

Telecommunication

Duration

Contribution

Self initiated Project

This project was done for WBA - Wholesale Business Analytics which offers different telecom operators to record and manage the journey of a deal that includes, budget forecasting and settlement.

When I saw the screens, I realised the need to make their products accessible for everyone because of its complexity and use of colour contrasts.

I pitched them to take this up as an Initiative to improve their overall experience.

We identified

More than 35% of

users have visual disabilities

About WBA

WBA (Wholesale Business Advisor) is one of the products which Mobileum offers to multiple operators in the world to records and manage a journey of a deal.

It is used by 30,000 users at different levels.

Constraints

Since it is an ongoing live product, we could not make a lot of structural changes. We could only go to that route with time.

No scope to accommodate as a separate task, should be a picked up with other ongoing big enhancements

PRODUCT GOAL

Redesign the existing interface to make it accessible for everyone to use

My Role

Strategize and execute plan while accommodating the usual goals and responsibilities of the bigger picture

My Approach

Discovery

I began by meticulously delineating the WCAG Guidelines' parameters, ultimately crafting a comprehensive checklist by amalgamating various sources and supplementary guidelines for AA standard.

Implementation

After carefully reviewing the checklist, I went ahead with the analysis of the current design to determine the minimal changes needed to accomplish our objective.

Design

At this stage, I incorporated all the changes in the existing screens without much structural change ensuring the accessibility score increase to match AA standards

I began by understanding

How is this interface perceived

*Evaluated this screen for various color blindness disabilities and other vision disabilities.

Protonopia Vision

People with protanopia are unable to perceive any ‘red’ light and cannot distinguish between red and green color.

Deuteranopia vision

People with deuteranopia are unable to perceive any ‘green’ light and cannot distinguish between red and green color.

Tritanopia vision

People with deuteranopia are unable to perceive any ‘blue’ light and is extremely rare condition.

Achromatopsia vision

People with achromatopsia are unable to perceive any color and can only see white, back and shades of grey

How Might We

How might we make this product accessible for AA standards without any major structural change?

For Accessibility Check

Too many guidelines but not at one place

Checklist Mapping

After reviewing various web checklists and standards, I found it challenging to maintain organization and ensure future scalability.

As a solution, I created a checklist adhering to the AA standard, which can be utilized to assess any screen with ease.

According to the checklist

Current design scores 38.8%

Refreshed Design

Refreshed screen

Primary color changed to an accessible color

Tuned secondary and tertiary colors to match the contrast ratio of AA standard

Added icons to denote increase and decrease

Improvement in the filter section

Added boundaries to differentiate within the columns

Tritanopia vision

Achromatopsia vision

According to the checklist

Refreshed design scores 88.8%
